FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE District 85P Mid-Term Status ReportToday's Date -- December 22, 2007 Dear Officers and Members of District 85, We began the current Toastmaster Year a little less than six months ago when the 47 clubs of the Territorial Council of China were elevated to Provisional District Status by Toastmasters International’s Board of Directors effective July 1 of 2007. It has been an exciting six months for me helping our officers and members as they begin their journey of personal growth and development through the different programs available to them in Toastmasters. One of the greatest joys in my life is assisting members and clubs as they strive to improve themselves and in the process make our district stronger – to say the least, it has been a very joyful first six months. This note is to let all of our members and clubs know the current status of our clubs and district and to help each of you to define your goals for the final six months of this Toastmaster year. We had a very successful and enlightening Fall Conference in Beijing this past October. To all of the members of the Beijing team that arranged and coordinated this conference please accept my heartfelt thanks for your efforts and dedication. Now the team in Shanghai has begun the initial planning and development for the Spring Conference which will be held in May. Early next month Lt. Governor of Education and Training Victor Yu, ACS/CL will be announcing the preliminary agenda, Speech Contests and date of the conference – please look for this communication so you can begin plans to attend what should be another outstanding conference meeting. One of the highlights of this conference will be the election of officers that will lead our district next year – if you would like to participate in either the committee nominating persons to serve or would like to be a candidate for office, please go to our 2008-2009 Election page on this website . As this is just the eighth year since the initial clubs in China were formed and only the second year where there has been an infrastructure (in the form of the Territorial Council and now our District) in place to support these clubs, the growth of strong new clubs within China has been occurring at a steady rate. Hardly a day goes by when one of our district officers is not contacted by a person or an organization wishing to form a new Toastmaster Club. Since July 1 there have been 8 new clubs added into District 85 in Beijing, Hang Zhou and Shanghai bringing our total number of clubs to 55; and we anticipate that there will be at least 8 additional clubs added before the end of February 2008. Congratulations to the clubs that have been added so far this year – here is a list of these clubs, their club number, their Charter Dates and the City where they meet:
I want to thank each and every person that have helped these clubs as they began their first steps as new clubs – your efforts will ensure these clubs to have a long and productive future helping individual members to achieve their personal educational and leadership goals. As there are still many clubs yet to be chartered within the district, if you would like to be a part of the team assisting one of these developing clubs in Beijing, Dalian, Hang Zhou, Shanghai, Shenyang, Shenzhen or Zhu Hai, please contact your local Area Governor for more information. Individual members have also been quite busy this year in achieving their personal developmental goals within Toastmasters. To date 72 members in 25 clubs have achieved one or more educational awards. These include 42 members achieving their Competent Communicator (CC), 7 members achieving their Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB), 3 members achieving their Advanced Communicator Silver (ACS), 25 members achieving their Competent Leader (either CL or OCL), 3 members achieving their Advanced Leader Silver (ALS) and one member completing their Distinguished Toastmaster award (DTM). A full listing of the members and the awards they have achieved by date can be found on Member Educational Awards page. At the beginning of the year, Toastmasters International set goals for every district in the world to try and achieve in this year within the areas of Club Development, Membership Growth, Educational and Leadership Awards. I am pleased to tell you that our district leads the world in the percentage of goal achievement in the areas of Club Development (106.38% of this goal) and Membership Growth (64.56% of this goal) and is third in the world for our achievement in Leadership Awards (126.09% of this goal). While we are on track to achieve the Educational Goals of CC and AC awards earned by our members, these categories are not currently as strong of a performance as these others. Currently we are ranked 17th in the world in the percentage to goal for CC (50.00% of this goal) and 67th (out of 80 districts) in AC (41.67% of this goal). While our leadership team is confident that these two areas will improve before the end of this Toastmaster Year in June, I ask that if you have a goal of achieving any of the educational awards this year that you take the steps to ensure you meet your goal. In the process you will allow your club and our district to achieve the success it has planned. As we look forward to the next six months of this initial year for our district I am sure you see as bright a future as I do. I envision that all of our individual and collective goals will be achieved and that we will be stronger for the efforts of our leaders and members this past year. I want to thank everyone for their efforts, but particularly those that have stepped up to serve the members and clubs in China as part of the leadership team – you are the future for Toastmasters in China, a future that you are helping to write with your efforts now and in the coming months. Thank you to everyone for such a successful and rewarding initial six months – I know that the next six will even more successful than these first months.
Sincerely, Keith Ostergard, DTM |
