FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

District Governor's Message - February 2008

    Going For Your Goals

Today's Date -- February 27, 2008

Dear District 85 Members and Officers,

We are quickly approaching the final few months of this Toastmaster Year – and what a year it has been so far! We began the year as the newest Provisional District in Toastmasters after only one short year as a Territorial Council and we will end the year by becoming one of the newest Full Districts since the Toastmasters International Board of Directors voted to approve our becoming a Full District effective July 1, 2008. This would not have been possible without the support of so many members throughout China – their dedication to helping others by assisting new clubs as they develop and by their simply spreading the news about the benefits of being a member of our organization. This is evident to me as I review the district reports and see that we have increased adding new members to existing clubs by 72% over last year (an average of 8 new members for every club in China)! A phenomenal achievement for this point in the year and one that shows how we are spreading the word about Toastmasters in our cities and areas.

This time of the year is also when we each should be looking at the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year – are you on track to achieve your goal? Your goal may be to earn your next Educational or Leadership Award – Will you achieve this before the end of June? As a club leader, your goal may be to ensure that your club is Distinguished or better – Will you achieve your goal before June 30? If you can answer yes to either or both of these questions, then you are well on your way to achieving your goal.

If you found that you were either unsure of your answer or, sadly, had to answer no to these questions do not despair – there is still time for you to achieve the goal. If your goal is a personal educational achievement, you should talk with the VPE of your club to see about ensuring you are scheduled to achieve your personal goal. As the VPE will need to balance the personal goals of many members, you might also consider if becoming a dual member in another club would allow you to achieve your goal. Currently there are 44 dual members in China (23 in Division E, 16 in Division N, and 5 in Division S) that have found they are able to achieve their personal goal quicker by opting to double (or in some cases triple) their memberships in clubs. If your goal is for your club to be Distinguished or better, you can check the current number of goals your club has achieved by going to DCP Reports page on the TI website which are updated weekly. If your club has not achieved its goal, the leaders can look at the remainder of the year and revise their plan so the goal can be achieved. If you need additional educational awards (which will help your members to achieve their personal goals), perhaps you should consider offering a Speech-a-Thon meeting – these are meetings where there are only speeches given (the evaluators write their evaluations and then give feedback to the member following the meeting). I attended one of these a couple of years ago where the club had ten speakers and each gave a different manual speech from the Competent Communicator manual – at the end they had seven guests that decided to join just because they could see the benefit of the progressive development offered in the manual!

As a district, we too have set our goals – portions of which have already been achieved. One of our goals was to be changed to Full District status before the end of the year, which was accomplished. The remainder of the goals all depend upon you, your club and its members achieving their goals – as these are the items that are used to have our district recognized as one of the top districts in the world. We currently are leading or are near the lead in many of the categories; however, we need additional Educational Goals to be completed in order to achieve our goals for the year. The area that needs the greatest amount of help now is in achievement of members earning Advanced Communicator awards – we have a little over half of the minimum target and only a third of the year remaining. If you or someone in your club is working to achieve an Advanced Communicator award please find time in your schedule to allow them to achieve their personal goal – it will help them, your club and the district.

Of course the greatest goal of the district was in the expansion of clubs and cities with clubs. In this we have very successful. To date, thirteen clubs have been added in the district and we have increased cities with clubs by adding clubs in Hangzhou and Suzhou. Currently there are eight additional clubs in the process of being formed (these include clubs that will expand the network of cities with clubs to include Changshu and Dalian) and an additional twelve clubs in development discussions. We are well on our way to exceeding the goal of 65 clubs that was set at beginning of the year – which is one of the reasons TI moved us to Full District status beginning next year, the growth opportunities for clubs in the district. The ability to develop clubs is dependant upon volunteers to assist these clubs, so if you are interested in being a part of the team that will continue the growth of clubs in China, please contact your Area or Division Governor so they can add you to these teams.

So ask yourself what your goal is and how are you going to achieve it this year. There is still time for you to achieve your goals, but as with all goals they will require you to plan and actively pursue your dream.

Sincerely,

Keith Ostergard, DTM
