FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sichuan Earthquake

Today's Date -- May 13, 2008

Dear Officers and Members of District 85 and our friends from around the world,

While news and information from the region impacted by the massive earthquakes that occurred on the afternoon of May 12 in Sichuan province are still being gathered, the initial indications are that none of the members of the Chengdu Toastmasters Club (#606667-85), the club closest to the epicenter of the quakes, were injured.  This was indeed very good news to hear. It is, however, too early to tell of the impacts and injuries that may have occurred to the families and friends of members in Chengdu and members throughout the rest of China.  The thoughts and concerns of the District Officers goes out to any member and their families that have been impacted by this tragedy.

Within minutes of the news of the Sichuan quake making the international news programs, I received a note from Executive Director Donna Groh (who visited our Shanghai Conference in 2006):

I hope all our Toastmasters are ok - I hope all are well.

Donna H. Groh
Executive Director
Toastmasters International

Shortly afterwards this was followed by a note from Nancy Langton, Director of Operations and Administration at World Headquarters:

We are so sorry to learn of the major earthquake that has struck China. So many lives were lost. Our thoughts are with you and all of our Toastmasters who may be affected or who may have family who are affected.

Please let us know if there is anything we can do.

Sincerely,

Nancy Langton
Director Operations and Administration
Toastmasters International

The concerns shared by Donna and Nancy are echoed in the voices of the staff and Toastmaster members across the world and we thank them for their support during this time of crisis.

Members that would like to give assistance to the victims of the earthquake are encouraged to contact their local Red Cross of China offices or other organizations helping the victims.

Sincerely,

Keith Ostergard, DTM
2007-2008 District Governor
District 85P - People's Republic of China
