FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2008 District 85P Spring Conference and District Council MeetingToday's Date -- June 4, 2008 Club and District Officers, For those of you that were at the 2008 District 85P Spring Conference in Shanghai last weekend I do not need to tell you what a fantastic conference we had – for those of you that were not able to attend, you missed a unique opportunity to learn from some exceptionally skilled and talented Toastmasters. I want to thank Past Territorial Council Chairman Warwick John Fahy, DTM for sharing his unique insights on leadership and change; to Past International Director Jim Kokocki, DTM who cam from New Brunswick Canada to help our members understand how to develop a speech with only a limited amount of time to prepare; and, finally to the 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking, Darren LaCroix who came from Las Vegas in the US to train, motivate and entertain all that witnessed his unique style of speaking and training. This was indeed a unique opportunity to learn, meet members from across China and to celebrate the successes that we have had thus far in the year. I want to extend my thanks to Division E Governor Rebecca Hong and the Conference Committee for their hard work and dedication to ensuring the success and enjoyment of the over 360 members and guests that were able to attend. I also want to thank Lt. Governor of Education & Training Victor Yu, ACS/CL as well as Bill Wang, CC and Yingdan Liu, ACS/ALB and all the other members from Shanghai who took time from their busy schedules to assist our foreign guests during their visit to Shanghai. One of the items that occurs at each conference is our semi-annual District Council Meeting. At this conference over 47 clubs were in attendance and we exceeded the number of certificates or proxies needed to conduct business as a council (quorum for our district is 23 clubs represented). Several business items were conducted at this conference’s meeting that I will report to you now. First, the proposed alignment for 2008-2009 was discussed and appended by the Council and the alignment with one change was approved by the District Council. District 85 (without the P) will consist of five divisions in 2008-2009 which will be designated A-E. The approved division/area assignments can be viewed by going to the 2008-2009 District Leader page and then clicking on the link for the respective Division Governor Profile – to learn more about your leaders for next year and the clubs that will be assigned to their Divisions for 2008-2009. The second item of business conducted was the election of officers to serve during 2008-2009. The link above will give you their names and the offices they will serve in the coming Toastmaster Year – however here are their names and their offices for the coming year:
Please join me in congratulating these officers on their election and wishing them success as they lead the district in the year ahead. The final piece of business conducted at the meeting was the decision on the locations for the 2008-2009 Fall and Spring Conferences – the Fall Conference will be in Guangzhou (date to be determined and announced soon) and the Spring Conference will either be in Beijing or Tianjin (location and date to be announced in the future). The conference this past weekend marked the beginning of the end of my year as your District Governor, a bitter-sweet moment for me. To use the Olympic theme that was ever-present at the conference, this past weekend we passed the torch of leadership to a new generation of leaders – leaders that all began as Toastmasters in China and that have been developed within the clubs of China. I have no doubts that the incoming team will succeed in new ways that we only dreamed about a few short years ago – that they will be stepping forward to ensure the success of our members and clubs and in the process will expand the network of clubs within China. I would be remiss if I did not thank those that have helped me this year with their advice and input – all of our current leaders that serve as club officers, Area, Division and District officers – you all gave advice when asked (or when needed) and helped me to try and make the “right” decisions along the way. While not everything was perfect this year, it was through the efforts of the members, clubs, officers and leaders in the district that all of the success we have had were able to be accomplished. While I will be sending one final note to all of you to let you know the final Distinguished District results when these are published in July, I want to let everyone know now that any success we have had as a district has been due to you and your members – the most important Toastmasters in all of China. I look forward to my “retirement” so that I can once again enjoy the greatest title in all of Toastmasters – Member. Sincerely, Keith Ostergard, DTM
